ohmygod! I got to the TUNNEL!! :D

I'd have gotten there a lot faster if I'd been walking over the last three weeks. Of course I didn't count the walking I did on the ship, which was a lot, and a lot of it being stairs. I was going to take a pedometer, but forgot, and then we found out that Eor's sisters and niece's pedometers got messed up by the motion of the ship, so I guess it doesn't matter.

So, yeah, I could do better, but I have actually swept the driveway (arm workout with that huge push-broom), lifted weights, and walked briskly on an incline of 8, today. Now I've got to take a quick shower before bed. Have been doing the weights more over the past few days because my shoulder has been getting worse over the winter. This is my left, and it just sort of loses power at a certain point when I'm putting my jacket on or the like, that motion. Hawk tells me if I don't work it, it will calcify and then I'll have real problems.

So, what shall we use for a grammar and punctuation reference if Strunk and White is now in the doghouse?

(Copy/pasted from the Wiki on "Elements of Style"):

In criticizing The Elements of Style, Geoffrey Pullum, professor of linguistics at Edinburgh University, and co-author of The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002), said that:

The book's toxic mix of purism, atavism, and personal eccentricity is not underpinned by a proper grounding in English grammar. It is often so misguided that the authors appear not to notice their own egregious flouting of its own rules . . . It's sad. Several generations of college students learned their grammar from the uninformed bossiness of Strunk and White, and the result is a nation of educated people who know they feel vaguely anxious and insecure whenever they write however or than me or was or which, but can't tell you why.[10]

I'd prefer to have something searchable, and online so I can link people to it. Any suggestions?

Now I've really got to go see if the shoe shop has my boots ready - ha, just as I wrote that they called to say they're ready, that's timing for you. :) I also need to dig out my several sets of glasses frames which I have plans for and take them down to the optometrist's. I hope soon to have two sets of driving glasses, one clear and one dark. :) I may have to clean out the stupid, tiny glove box to make room for them.

Pretty sure that this was on Saturday because my walk was interrupted by Hawk phoning to let me know where his place in Waterville was - which he was moving out of on Sunday, so we had to come have dinner with him on Saturday just so we could see how nice it was. :)

On our drive up to Waterville we passed through Topsham (because we'd stopped in Brunswick to pick up Indian food to take up to Hawk's) and saw people standing outside the Dairy Queen in shorts and tee-shirts, snow still on the ground. And after dinner Hawk suggested we go out for ice-cream. :) We're standing there in front of the window, trying to make up our minds (because Waterville has Gifford's, where they make up new flavors all the time), and one of the other guys in line said, "What's wrong with us? We're crazy!" "We're Mainers," the woman with him said. Ayuh. It's above freezing, let's go out for ice-cream. ;)

On the way to Gifford's we stopped to take a look at the old place where Mom, Hawk and Eightball lived when Hawk and Eightball were in high school, and Hawk told me again how Eightball managed to back Mom's 1970-something Dodge Dart V8 through the back wall of the garage. Of course it didn't actually go all the way through, just bent the wall out, and didn't leave a scratch on the car, which I'm glad of because I know how much Mom loved it. She loved driving fast and loud. :)

My car is now fixed, and I'm $520 poorer. While I was waiting for the car I wrote a little more Story, but (*debating how I should tell you this...*) again, I will have to change the end of a chapter I have already posted. *hangs head in shame* This is not right, this is not how the game is supposed to work. I'm supposed to find a way to write my way out of the stupid mistakes I make. Um, yeah. Only the thing is, when I wrote the end of the last chapter and posted it I had actually planned to have a certain thing happen, and then for some reason I forgot what I had planned and after I posted it I read what I'd posted (duh, read it before you post it, stupid) and went, "Uh, what? What did I just do??" Yeah, so... my new rule has to be, type, then wait. Give it a day, reread it before posting it, remember where you were planning on going.

. . .

Heeeeyyy!!! Eor got the mail and I have a book from cyberquail! :) "Inheritance," the fourth of Paolini's series which starts with "Eregon." I'm almost ready for it, too, perfect. :)

I say 'almost' because, as usual, I'm behind on my Patrick O'Brian book (the read is currently at "HMS Surprise"), AND, AND, I also am the lucky, lucky girl who received a late Christmas present last weekend from littleredhead and groundctrl of the second season of "Sherlock," which I've had sitting on my desk all week, looking at it and anticipating getting a chance to watch this evening. :)

I can't believe I didn't post about the fact that they came down last weekend and we had a visit full of catching up and tales of their house building, and went to see that new Oz movie. I had meant to, wanted to, tell all the details and pick the movie apart review the movie. (It was fun, but I kind of am over this business of filming everything so it will look cool in 3D. Really, skimming by jutting rocks and falling from really high places does not advance the plot any.)

I don't know where my head has been, all week that I haven't actually got it together to write about stuff much at all. Well, worrying about Eor's toes, not sleeping all that well and getting my schedule bounced around, but that's no excuse really, as that's just my life. I should be used to it by now.

Now I really need to buckle down and work on a beta for someone. It's something I promised to do about Christmas time and have had the document on my computer for a few weeks, now, and I'm sure she'd like to move this book along in its progress toward possible eventual publishing. I have picked at it a bit, but really just picked.

I set the treadmill at a much lower angle, today, because I already had a headache, and lately I've noticed that breathing hard gives me a headache. I'm not sure when that started or what that's about. My initial thought was that it had to do with my blood pressure rising when I was walking hard, but the I realized that if I just breath hard through my nose a couple of times, not exercising, I start to get a headache. Seems to be my sinuses being oversensitive.

Anyhow, it's my friday and I'm very happy about this. Tomorrow is another car appointment, two hours this time, and I need to be there at 9am, so I need to get up and going in the morning, no dilly-dallying, no shilly-shallying, no lolligagging or wool-gathering. I'll have two hours to wool-gather once I get there, and I hope to do similarly to last week - drink lots of coffee and write. :) Only, starting on actual breakfast before I leave so I won't get all shaky like last time.

OTOH, I suppose it would be cool to hang out with people, too. Maybe. Hm. *weighs time to myself against time socializing.* I really don't know.

Mainertoo said something this morning about unemployment being about $360 weekly, and I went, "Hm, really?" He knew instantly what I was thinking, and voiced it - "If I can figure out how to live on that I can read more books..." We have worked together for ten years. :)

I also converted an almost unreadable memo into an almost readable power point intended to edjumicate everyone about their duties and rally points in the event of evacuation from our workplace. Yay me. :) At least I finished something.

And I helped at least two people practice to retake their tests.

That doesn't sound like much but I was busy all day. What the hell was I doing all day that I barely got a break? There was some data entry. A manager found a stack of things from last October he'd been hiding in a corner of his desk.

Time for a brief bath (I hope), a bit of ice-cream, and sleep. Need to get to work a little early to prepare for class because one participant is going to join us via web-cam - have to make sure that works.

Today I did some walking, some stretching, some weight lifting, some laundry, some dishes, a little reading in "Brinsngr" and a little in "HMS Surprise" ... a LOT of trying to figure out how the ship's bells system works (/me is a dork who should have checked Wiki to begin with) and about zero real writing. What is with those duty watches? Intended to keep people sleep deprived and easily pliable?

Also wanted to note, Moose came up with a phrase yesterday that might be used as an Aubreyism if I ever write an Aubrey/Maturin fic: "He doesn't have a pony in the fight." It conjures images of Shetlands biting at each other, doesn't it? :)

Tonight I'm going on an adventure: the First Friday Art Walk in Portland. :)

The point-oh-eight was actually a sprint about a half hour earlier than the rest of the walk, to perk myself up and inspire me to get some things done. I did that, put the dishes and laundry in, and then was able to convince myself to just walk. It's NOT that Farmer Maggot's dogs chased me! :)

What I actually did today was work with people who'd failed their first attempt at a test and were preparing to take it again. One guy - I've mentioned him before, he's the old guy who was taken out on a stretcher and was back at work the next day, and someone commented that he sets the bar pretty high for the rest of us, to live up to such toughness - he mentioned that he probably should have asked to put off taking the test because he was not feeling well, it being four days after his chemo treatment. "My wife told me not to come in to work, but I wanted the holiday pay. I should have listened to her, she's always right." I said, "Well, perhaps she was," and he insisted, "No perhaps. She is always right. She's very intelligent." Good man. :)

...

"The Winter Queen (a Fandorin mystery)" by Boris Akunin became book #11. Eor hated this book, but I found it mostly rather charming. Up to the end it was charming, but I didn't like the end. Eor's right, though - the cover calls it a mystery, but it's not. It's an action-adventure tale, with a very grim and peculiar sense of humor. Well, I guess that's to be expected; it's translated from Russian. :) I have this feeling that someone suggested it to me or I'd heard about it somewhere and that was what got me to pick it up, but possibly I just wanted to take a chance on something Russian set in the 1800.

Why did Tolkien name him Farmer Maggot? Was it just to build up that sense of fear and distrust before he invited them in for dinner and turned out to be a sterling fellow?

"Continued on the journey." Nothing happened, besides my belly getting bigger.
My day felt kind of lazy. Two days in a row I've slept in, about ten hours each night. Not sure why I needed so much sleep, but last week was kind of tiring with the being up at 4:30 most days and 3:30 on Wednesday, so I guess I had a backlog of exhaustion. I've also been trying to cut down on the caffeine, so maybe more sleep was possible. I'm a little afraid I'm getting sick, though.

I had a list of things to do, today, and none of them particularly worked out. Check to see if our new fixture for our faucet filter came in - it hadn't. I'll bet you didn't know that PUR water filters have a weak spot in that the piece which afixes them to the faucet is crappy plastic and wears out in a few months. I'll also bet you didn't really care, but people like us who've ended up buying another $30 filter only to have the second cheesy plastic connector wear out are pretty annoyed. The odd thing is, they haven't put the little plastic connectors out for sale in the stores, and I think that's because it would be like admitting they wear out. Instead you have to research it online and decide to call them and then they'll send you a new kit with a metal-threaded connector. But they know it's a huge issue because they've got a whole help-line dedicated to it: "Press one for English." "Press one if you have had a plastic connector wear out."

The other thing that happened this weekend: Our clothes washer died yet again, and Eor embarked on fixing it. This time he needs one of the brushes for the motor. So, I went searching today to see if those could be bought locally. They can't. It seems that they cost over $50 each and of course one always needs to buy two... or he could buy a whole new motor for $200. And not knowing if it's really just the chewed up brushes, I say that's the road to go.

Anyhow, in all I went out with about four goals and the only one I managed to accomplish was to get a couple of jugs of water.

Although I did meet a guy I know down at the Market (who I've had in training classes and such, but who also works for the Market) and mentioned to him that the guy who lives upstairs (who works for the Market) tends to leave the Market delivery truck idling in our yard for an hour or more, quite often. He said that's typical of that guy and, with a rather evil smile, "I'll take care of that for you." So possibly one more thing might have been accomplished. ;)

Happened to find a rather nice loaf of gluten free bread at the Market, too, the ingredient list of which starts with garbanzo, and as Eor had said he would probably have toast for breakfast tomorrow, and I had scoffed that toast was not breakfast, I thought this might make a more protein rich and hopefully healthier toast. It's not bad, though probably their recipe could have used a little more salt - a touch on the bland side.

Also, submitted three pages of a new story to a couple of beta readers to see if they can give me feedback and help on whether it might be worthwhile.

Eor says I'm going to outstrip his descriptions 'pretty soon.' I can't think it'll be all that soon, with me only making about a mile most days.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to have to be up at 3:30, at work at 5:30, to do some training with a guy. The annoying thing was, after changing my schedule to come in early they also changed his. Originally he was in at 4:30, I think, and was going to work with someone else for his first hour, but it turned out she wasn't going to be available at all. Now, as my manager pointed out, it would have been nice if they'd just changed him to come in at 8:45 when the class I'm teaching is over with, rather than me having to get up even earlier. But nobody breathed a word that changing his schedule was something they would consider until after my manager had changed mine and left work to attend to his step father in the hospital.
