Guys, I have a serious plot issue coming up with "Swept Away!" that I need help with badly. This is ... um, a bit weird. And I don't know how to avoid it.

Cut for spoilers )

PLEASE HELP ME.

Oh, also, if you haven't already heard: Riptide Publishing is launching a new LGBTQ YA section. I never before thought I had a snowballs chance in hell of getting "Swept Away" published, so I wasn't bothering to write with that in mind, but now there might be the slimmest sliver of a possibility. http://www.tritonya.com/

Well, there we go. Chapter Fifteen is finally up. I don't think I ever posted about the fact that I did actually edit Chapter Fourteen and add more to it, per Dr. Tronella's suggestion.

Chapter 15: News of the Walking Hills and walking toward the hills

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am, as they say, wielding my own proof-loofah these days, and I'm posting extremely exhausted almost every time I post, so any and all feedback, even down to "You're missing a space between two words, here" is much appreciated.

I don't know what's going on with the feel of the story. Am I keeping the voices right? Are they deteriorating or developing?

Chapter 14: The Lodge of the Swamp People

-----------------------------------------------------------

I honestly don't know if I should admit that I posted this chapter, because it's too short, and then I wrote more after I posted it which should have been part of this chapter, so I think I should probably have waited and posted it all together. I could, I suppose, add that last bit right now and never tell you that I'd done any different, but... I also want to push on and try to stop being hung up on stuff. It can all get re-written later.

Also, I have honestly tried to think of the Whistlers as something other than wombats, and have failed. They look like wombats in my head. That might be because when I was a young teen I read Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats. I can't remember anything that happened in it.

When I posted all the chapters of "Swept Away" to AO3 it calculated my word count total and came up with over 39,000. Crap. Ten thousand more words and I'll be to novel length, and I'm not halfway done. Hm.

I'm doing my own proof-read, since these three chapters have been sitting on the back burner since May. I want to blame that on my not having a beta-reader right now, though I realize that's a thin excuse. That's long enough so that I can now sit back and catch some of my own mistakes.

Now I realized upon rereading it that Chapter 12 ended kind of abruptly. And that this might be the place for some manly scrumpings. And I have to face, again, that I'm terrified of going there. Partly this is because I don't want people to take this as 'underage' - they're actually the same age, and in their culture (particularly in Tom's class) expected to be planning marriage and kids soon. Tom's mother is looking around for potential wives for him, at home, I tried to make that plain in a previous chapter. He's done with school and is out in the work force, and Ethan will be done with school in another year. Also, at some point I might have to deal with the fact that Ethan (in my head) has been the school bicycle, and is baffled and confused that Tom seems very kind and caring and completely innocent of that idea. Implications of underage is not actual underage, and even though that was actually a known and understood aspect of boys boarding schools at one time, in our society, now, it could be misconstrued. Another part is I'm afraid it might mess up the flow of the story if they do anything serious... like, ever.

But I'm sort of wondering if those are all excuses, and if this is all really about me being a complete wuss. And lazy. I'd better go do my grocery shopping.

Chapter Eleven - Friends in need )

As always, I actually DO want to know if you notice massive holes in the plot, stupid things that you don't think they would ever say, words or phrases which are not British English, horrible grammer/spelling/punctuation or anything at all which is confusing or makes you lose the ambiance. I don't post stuff just to hear lovely comments, although lovely comments make me feel all wonderful and warm and I do need some good feeling about my abilities at the moment so I can get on with writing chapter 14. Ah ha, yes, did I surprise you? There are indeed two more chapters in the pipeline for the near future. :)
Chapter 11 of "Swept Away!" is rough-typed, Chapter 12 is begun, and I have reams of paper left to type up. I'm debating posting pre-beta versions, so that Eor can take his time, later, and I can sail on for the moment, since I seem to want to treat this like a NaNo right now. They'll be full of holes and errors and suck, but what do you think?

ETA: OR, here's a thought, I can post them to this fiction-writing group I just joined, in the pre-beta version, and let them take their cracks at it, too.
I don't expect anyone to read this, at this point, I'm just mainly posting it so that the next time my computer decides to have a meltdown I won't lose it.

Let's see, what do I need to say, again? I wrote this, it's mine, I claim all rights to these characters, they're not stolen from anyone. Something like that? Eor betaed and I adore him for it, but I lost the spellchecker which I had set to Brit English in the last meltdown, so there might be more errors than usual.

Chapter 10, Sleep and Potatoes )

I'd better make a links post. What's the best way to do that?

Chapter Nine: Fire and Fish )
Chapter Ten
This post is for anyone in the middle of writing a fic (or many fics!) and it's so we have a chance both to share illustrative snippets and to bitch about how recalcitrant our fics are being.

I only have the one fic going, so you're going to get a sneak preview of the end of Chapters Nine, which [livejournal.com profile] eor is proofreading for me right now, and beginning of Chapter Ten (of Swept Away!, for anyone new to reading my journal there's more explainations about what this is at that link, and all the previous chapters) and I would love feedback on this, because I have Phipps doing a personality flip-flop and Tom being remarkably unaware and I wonder if I'm doing romance wrong.

cut for length and spoilers )

Now the sun is driving it's spikes into my eyes, time to abandon the computer for a while. At least this prompted me to type up the beginning of Chapter Ten which I had on paper. :)

I hate the fact that no matter how many times I've gone through chapters of "Swept Away!" I realize later on that there's one more mistake. And not little ones, but obvious blunders.
