26) Sharing Knife, Volume Four: Horizon - Bujold, yet again.

I liked how this series ended up. Some growing up for youngsters. Different races learning respect for each other after generations of poor interactions. Our Plucky Heroine helping defeat the Big Bad Boss (no, there's no particular ongoing Evil One in this series, but it's like playing Diablo where you meet different levels of monsters... er. yeah.)

Yeah, I don't really ask much more out of a book than that it have some decent female characters, a few things to say about societies and human interactions, and be fun. There were perhaps an unusually high number of young women who seemed to be kind of into older men, but those older men were at least interesting enough so that it made some sense to me. (Okay, I was a young woman once who did find some older men attractive, so I'm okay with this.) To spoiler it a bit, one seemed completely to be attempting to lure one of the guys back for credit with her 'family' (I guess you could say) rather than actually any real interest in him, one had a bit of hero worship thing going on and didn't actually bother him with it - she had plenty enough going on in her own life, they were just friendly and co-worker-ey. And with the two other pairs who really did hit it off, there seemed to be valid reasons why they would go for each other, outside of the initial book's "world-weary verging suicidal older guy falls for younger woman's perkiness (and brilliant mind), and she falls for his kindness and vision" - which, imho, is not that bad a basis for a relationship. But given the longer lives of the one race age differences do get minimized. There were also several other background couples who were age mates.
