work ethic

A group of us were talking this morning at work, and two coworkers who transferred in from other states said that they were surprised at how much harder it is to get the Role Model of Excellence designation in Maine. I told them it was because there are so many smart people here, and that got a good laugh from everyone.

But then the guy from away said, "There really is a very good work ethic, here, though. A lot of the places I've worked, if you told them that they might not get paid they wouldn't be showing up to work, but we were discussing the possible government shut down a few days ago and people were saying, 'Well, we still have to show up.' No you don't, not if the government shuts down and you won't get paid! 'But the airport will have to shut down if we don't show up.'"

The girl from away chimed in, "Every other airport in the country will be shut down, but Portland, Maine will be open!"

"I mean look at this guy here," GuyFA waved at the white haired gentleman in the room, "Nobody gets hauled out on a stretcher one day and is back at work the next day - except this guy! You wouldn't find that anywhere but Maine. Take a day off! No, he walks in, 'Yeah, I'm back, got a problem with that? You want a piece of this?' Christ, man, you just set the bar like a hundred feet higher!"
