I'm trying to decide what to cover those chess pieces with as a clear coat. What's better, nail polish or polyurethane?

Anything I've ever covered with clear nail polish looked bad. It got dirty and chippy, so now I only use that stuff if I'm covering something that won't be seen, like the nickel back of a watch. Hehheh, Nickelback...
