Friggin annoying.
Can one dream pain? At 3:30AM I rolled over on my right side, started to fall back asleep, and suddenly had a phantom stabbing pain in my left big toe. For the next hour - until my alarm went off - every time I started to fall asleep I had this stabbing pain. Because I was so sleepy and wanted to sleep on my right side (I'm very stubborn, especially when asleep) I wouldn't roll over, only shift a little. I suspect it to be caused by muscles either tensing or relaxing and causing a nerve to be pinched, because there's certainly nothing wrong with my toe, and it feels fine when I'm awake. For some reason a lot of my muscles tense up when I start to fall asleep; my neck, jaw, sometimes my mid back if I'm laying on my back. (Well, I guess the reason is what my doctor would call 'stray anxiety sloshing around.') And other muscles relax if that can be more annoying: my throat, so that I snore.
