We're doing what little we can to winterize, today: We've put up the red brocade curtains which we bought years ago to keep out the light when Eor was working overnights. Now they're over the doorways which don't have doors - the kitchen-to-hall, our bedroom-to-hall and the doorway in the middle of the hall. Now the back part of the hall is as dark as a pocket and the whole place looks a little more goth. I always find the process of covering windows and doorways and tightening things up to be cozy, maybe just because I know it will make me warmer, even if it takes away my light. I wish I had more heavy curtains for ALL the windows.
We bought, today:
- tension rods to hang the curtains in the doorways
- blackout shades for the guest and our bedroom (but the guy cut them a little too short so one won't fit anywhere)
- red flannel, some other cool random scraps (Eor had a good score with this one, every peice in the packet looks very nice. One with geishas! Very pretty. :)) and 1" cotton piping to use in making door snakes (Don't know if this will work right or not, but the plan is a combination of cotton piping and rice - since we have at least five pounds of rice that purports to be basmati which we got from BJ's a while back which is yucky - inside the plastic bags that went around the blackout shades, and then make cloth covers we can wash. I'm thinking of making some bedwarmer snakes as well, using rice and possibly Earl Grey tea or something to make them smell nice. I heard that rice is what's used in those things you heat in the microwave and use for sore muscles.)
- new filters for the water filter thingy we got about a month or so ago (which made our water immensely more drinkable).
- a filter for the water that pipes into the fridge to make ice, since the one helped so much for the drinking water. (Different brand, though. I grabbed something off the shelf at random.)
- a programmable thermostat so we can have the house warm up only when we need it to.
- lace for making curtains for the front door. In the spring.
We took way too much time in Jo-Ann Fabrics, mooning over lovely prints. Eor nearly talked himself into a $40/yd brocade for the door snakes - black with lots of sharply picked out detail in gold and other colors. We discovered that he goes for clear, sharp designs while I often like fuzzy edges. We also saw fabrics that we thought Kryptyd might have liked - pink with sketchy and cartoony skulls and crossbones. :) Ah, trying to describe it doesn't do it justice, they were very cool. I was awfully tempted, and I don't even like pink.
I did a search, and this was one of the patterns. That one is quite popular, it comes up often. The other one looked like that artist who Mizzmarvel pointed out to me as famous for cartoony characters on t-shirts who's name of course will escape me forever.
Halloween is the time to go for all the really cool fabric prints, but it was crazy ass packed in that store. Everyone wants to sew at this time of year. Or maybe it's mostly this year, because they're trying to avoid buying things so they're making things? The general consensus among the people waiting for help was that you had to have two people to shop there - one to hold the number and stand around while the other does the shopping.
Well this is a silly rambling post. Guess we've got to figure out what we're going to cook for dinner now that it's 7pm. :P
