Holiday Wish List Meme

I'm going to do this only because I want everyone else to do it so I can have something to work from if I can get off my ass and send out presents this year, and I don't want to be thinking about it last minute. Remember - tag it 'holidays' or something so I can find it, later!

I want to make it absolutely clear that I promise nothing and I do not expect anything - our apartment is already full to bursting with stuff, and unless I get some sudden inspiration I am, as anyone who knows me is fully aware, a complete idiot about getting anything done this time of year at any time of year.

Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
[I hereby designate [livejournal.com profile] eor keeper of my address, as I am of his - if you have something you want to send him, ask me for his address, if you want to send me something ask him for my address. That way you can remain anonymous or keep the existence of your intent a surprise. And he'll probably know if someone else has already done/acquired whatever you were thinking of.]
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use—or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free—do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf—to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not — it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

Step Three

01) A new job that uses my skills and talents and is not with the public.
02) Love for [livejournal.com profile] eor, not just now but all year 'round. In the form either of comments in his journal, email, letters and other indications that people appreciate him, or an actual girlfriend with true romantic intentions - any or all of those would make him happy and when he's happy he's cute. When he's in love he's particularly adorable. :)
03) More in any sort of fic you normally write, almost certainly, because whoever you are, if I've commented that I like your fic, I want more of it.
04) Mike/Psmith fic. (Seriously, as many of these as anyone can possibly write there will never be enough.)
05) Letters or stream-of-consciousness writing.
06) Readers and commenters on my stories (hey, this is about being selfish, right? Pimp me if you can in all honesty. Or give me feedback, however harsh - I want it, it helps me as a writer.)
07) Non-perishable foods or small stuff special to your geographic area (I'm in Maine, USA).
08) A paid LJ account.
09) Here's my Amazon wish list (I hope) - if you actually are stuck for ideas and have your heart set on buying a thing. I'm usually happier with used copies of anything. Please note, though, I'd be just as happy if you want to use money that you donate to your favorite charity and send me a card indicating same.
10) My crazy and 'I certainly don't expect it to be fulfilled' wish for the year: A small, cheap point-and-shoot digital camera with flip-up screen for focusing - I've never been able to get a decent picture of someone when it was bloody obvious that I was pointing a camera at them. And I hate borrowing [livejournal.com profile] eor's camera, it's far too expensive. Again, used is good, so long as it takes a fair picture.

Hee, aww, well I can try 3 but afraid I'm not good enough for 4 yet. Hurrah, I see you've just got 8. Sorry to say it wasn't me, as I am poor XD but good on whoever it was.

I'll be happy as anything with some of #3 from you. ;)

Yeah, I was totally floored by such a quick response time.
If I was a popular person with a lot of friends I might think LJ had done it to promote the idea of giving time as a present, but I think I'm unpopular enough to fly under their radar (one reason I avoid friending too many people), so I think it almost has to be someone I know.

[livejournal.com profile] eor commented on what a good icon that one Draco is. ;)

Can #5 be in your journal or do you want something in the mail?

Oh, either's fine, or email. :)

A stream consciousness piece of writing for you..

When I was a teenager, I was reading a book of American mythical creatures to my baby sister. She had checked it out of the library, but couldn't read it by herself, being ten years younger than me.

The only creature I can remember from that book was the squonk. It was a creature that lived in the Pennsylvanian mountains, who was so ugly that if anyone saw one, it would cry itself into a puddle of saltwater.

For some reason, I took great offense that someone would consider this poor creature a monster, just because of its looks and have carried a fondness for the imaginary creature ever since.

I think that in some ways, I have a squonk inside me. There are times when I feel horribly unattractive and down on myself. And sometimes I just have to have a good cry to get that feeling out. I don't know why it helps, but it is like what is really making me ugly is not my actual appearance, but my sadness and disappointment in myself. Because when I let that go, I actually feel beautiful and even look beautiful to myself in the mirror.

I think it's more than just smiling. I think that sometimes you just have to cry to wash the dust and grime off your soul.

If I were to be granted the opportunity to meet a mythical creature, then I would want to hug a squonk and tell it, it was loveable. I know that's weird, but it's the truth.

Maybe I could design a squonk plushie. I have a plushie ebola virus. My daughter tells me that her black plague plushie is better, but my ebola has something her plague microbe doesn't - a theme song. Right now, it's only singing "'bola-'bola" to the melody of "Woolly-Bully", but I have fun singing it with my plushie. Yes, my kids know their mother is silly. Apparently my type of silliness make me a cool mom, instead of just an embarrassing mom. Though my daughter doesn't like my 'bola-'bola song. My son and I tell her that she's just jealous because her black plague doesn't have a cool song too. One of these days, we're going to do a video of my Ebola plushie dancing around, singing it.

God, I love being a geek!

Oh, that's sweet! Such a sad monster - it should definetly have a plushie for kids to hug.

You must be the cool mom - you make plushies of viruses. ;) And then give them songs! Poor black plague should have a song, too; it shouldn't be left out. ;)

Actually, I didn't make these plushies (though I have made others). You can buy Giant Microbe Plushies online - http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/plush/6708/images/

My daughter also has mad cow disease and the flesh eating bacteria.

Well, see? I had never imagined. I'll have to point this out to my coworker - she used to be a bio (or something) teacher, and she's just getting her granddaughter into using a microscope.

There's actually a song about the squonk by Genesis

Thanks for the link! I would have never imagine that a British singer would do a song about an obscure American myth.

The wikipedia entry on the squonk has been expanded since I last read it and is rather interesting.
