massive post of doom re computer viruses and the party last week

Yesterday was full of computer woes for me. I got some sort of virus or ran afoul of some exploit with a file called "Fishdown" (I think it was) associated with it and ended up unplugging the computer from the network and running the virus scanner because it was apparently getting reinfected as fast as it was getting rid of the old one. I don't know if I got it from the Megauploads site or Facebook or possibly in my email. There was this email from a name that sounded vaguely familiar, and I opened the email (which usually does nothing because I use Eudora as my email client, which doesn't automatically execute things) but didn't open the YouTube link in it, but when my computer started going nuts and opening a zillion browsers one of them was on a YouTube video, apparently. And no, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Facebook had been used to spread some kind of exploit - Eor ran into something just viewing LJ pages the other day.

I disconnected my computer, ran CA antivirus, and spent some time cleaning up my desktop and thinking about what I want to do as far as backing things up, so I suppose that it was a good for me in that way. But when I went to reconnect it, my computer didn't want to recognize our network, and I didn't want to screw around and mess up any settings, so I left a note for Eor and asked him to fix it. It took him some time and rooting around to get the rest of the traces of this exploit ferreted out, but I have a working computer again. He's reset my security options on my Internet Explorer, hoping to avoid this happening again.

The new options, though, are causing some weird interactions with LJ. I'm seeing locked posts as if I'm logged in, but I'm getting notifications about adult content and I have to log in EVERY time I leave a comment. Just to be annoying, when I reply to a comment the original post disappears while I'm in the reply screen, which is hard on a person with no memory. Worse, my filters no longer work, so I'm back to reading everything posted by everyone when I'd planned to read only the Important People - hard on a person who's easily distractable!

I need to update my IE or go to something else - Firefox, perhaps? - because I guess they don't support IE 6 anymore. :P Eor says IE 7 is not so bad when you get it set up right. I hope I can get rid of the tabbed browsing thing, I hated that, though I don't recall why.

In other news, I went with Eor to hang out while he was starting up the van, in case he needed a push to get out of the snow, but all went smoothly. Then he stopped at the end of the drive and sat there until I came up to see what was going on. He just wanted to make sure I had my keys to get back into the house. :) I've been pretty good about remembering my keys, lately - it's easier when you're wearing the same coat and they can stay in the pocket - but 6AM would be a sucky time to lock yourself out. It's so sweet of him to watch out for me. :)

And while I'm posting, have a photo from the Winter Holiday party the other day.

I was hoping to have more photos and post them all together, but I forgot to take my camera with me and only one person has sent anything to me, as yet. Phoebe took this pic with her phone and sent it right away. (She's so cute. :) "Mentor-mentee pic! Put your arm around each other!")

On the right is Duffy who was my first mentee (although since there is no such word we call them manatees or I call them ducklings) way back years ago, and he's now a mentor with a duckling of his own. I'm proud of him. :) I advocated to the guy who's in charge of the mentor program that I thought he would be good, and I think I was right. He is by nature very slow and detailed in his speech, which can be a challenge for some people to listen to in normal conversation, but is not necessarily a bad thing when a new person is trying to make sense of the controlled chaos that is our workplace - I think for some people it can be calming and give them time to think about the whole process. And he's much better about having a point in mind when he starts one of these verbal rambles since Father D. told him that an end was essential to a story. ;)

I'm actually only 7 inches shorter than him, I know it looks like more. I was sitting on a barstool and leaning over.

Hopefully soon I will have more pics, including one of me with Big H. in his full Scottish regalia - I love how he gets dressed up in it at the least provocation. :) Mainertoo was offering $10 to anyone who would check and see if he was going properly (un)dressed beneath the kilt, and Sister S. offered to do it for free because he'd bought her a drink. I suspect she never did, really. This IS still a work party. Not that this has stopped some people in the past. I'm thinking Moose and that guy who was a coworker of Sister S from her other job. They were in the bathroom together, last year... and then he went around kissing all the straight guys and letting them know what he'd just been up to. :) He decided not to drink a lot this year, as he had to drive himself home. Which was a bummer - that was good entertainment, right there. For me. ;)

ETA: Sorry so long and full of mistakes (I've edited three times already). This is what happens when I don't eat or have tea before posting.

Now must go get new tires for the car, if possible.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't love tabbed browsing. Of course, Firefox has had it forEVER and I don't use IE.

But I am thinking you could just...not use the tabs? In Firefox you can set it so that if a link is set to "open in new window" it will open in a whole new Firefox window, OR you can set it so those links will open in a new tab. Also when you right-click a link it has an option for "Open in new window" and "Open in new tab".

Yeah, Eor has told me that it's possible to set the newer IE so that it doesn't use tabs, and he says it's really not so bad once you've got it set up right, it just takes some tweaking.

I don't get why everyone loves tabbed browsing. :)
