I have returned from Seattle. :)

Arrived home just before 1AM, ate a very small bowl of curry and slept seven hours, had a long soaker of a bath, started laundry, ate again.

Also spent some time fooling around with the kefir grains which Minx gave me. She kindly copied out her whole kefir manual, and I have puzzled through it for a bit. It's... not written for someone as ADD as myself. Okay, the guy who wrote it, English is not his first language, but also he really should have had someone question him on exactness. At one point he talks about having done an experiment with two jars of kefir, covering one with a layer of olive oil and refrigerating the other, and says that the result was 'very sour.' But does NOT say which one of the two was sour. I read that line over and over and that was when I put the manual down and decided to wing it.

I need things straightforward and simple. What I have done is put my grains in a 1.5C mason jar with milk. The manual said to not cover airtight, so I have covered my jar with two layers of cheesecloth; I figure that will serve to strain it through when I pour some off to drink so I won't lose my grains. I reduced my instructions to myself (taped to the front of the jar) as "Don't refrigerate unless you're going away for a week. Drink each day and refill with milk. Rinse cheesecloth daily." I know Minx rinses the grains off as well, periodically.

I'm still not sure, after the reading I've done in the manual, that refrigerating the grains is okay, if I'm going away for a week or two. I did stick them in the fridge overnight when I first got home, and then fretted about that. It might actually be better to leave it in the cellar with a dishcloth across the top and then compost that milk when I get back. If anyone is actually conversant with having handled kefir grains, please let me know.

It is a living organism and I know it matters to Minx that I take care of it. She spent good money on these grains.

I also acquired some really kickass boots. I need to take a pic and post it, tomorrow. :)

Oh, and as per tradition, I picked up a cold, probably from Baby Longshanks. I had thought I was beating this cold, but apparently I only beat it home. During the day I've felt worse and worse.

Seattle is a gorgeous place, but it was kind of nice to wake up to brilliant sunshine on snow and a clear blue sky. And no Baby Longshanks. Dear as she is, she exhausted me.
