We took our new bear-resistant food canister to the woods this year, but it didn't even get tested. ;) Baxter State Park is lovely as ever. We had a great time with E.B., walking quite a few very pretty trails, playing cards at the campsite, toasting marshmallows, reading, writing letters and journals, and listening to the rain on the tarp. Our rain god status has returned. :)

Eor made it to the top of Katahdin, and within less than a hundred feet of the summit cone, in pouring rain. With the summit within sight he realized that his arbitrarily selected return time had come (noon), so he turned around, sticking to the plan. He stopped many times on the way up to let his heart slow down, per doctor's orders regarding heart attack survivors, but reports that the rest of his body had no trouble at all and powered on up the whole way, so he's very happy. :)

I, however, was unable to accompany him. I went as far as Katahdin Stream Falls, but turned around there, and was wiped out when I got back to camp. I've been trying to keep up with him with regard to his rehab exercises, but have hit a wall which concerns me, so I'm going to be looking into this with my doctor.

All our stuff is now either on the line, sitting in the sun in the driveway, or in the washer at the moment, because it rarely stopped raining the entire time we were there. Sunny and lovely here, today, of course. ;)

It was a good trip, all in all. We got to try out a lot of our new backpacking gear, but in a controlled situation with car support.

The below Eowyn Challenge entry was actually walked on the Lincoln Woods Trail in the Pemigiwasset Wilderness, New Hampshire, (White Mountains area). There was snow! I slipped on it and gouged my knuckle. We camped out and I was very cold all night even with all my clothes on in the zero-degree bag. Also, we saw a young moose!

Today, Derien travelled 11.1 miles on the journey from Bag End to Rivendell.

Stopped in a hollow atop a hill. Sat in the shade of a standing stone, ate and slept.
Headed north, but lost way. Was captured by a Wight
Rescued by Tom Bombadil
Headed down hill to the north into the valley.
Passed through a gap between two steep shoulders then turned due north.

A total of 118.9 miles along the way.

I'm trying hard to not read any spoilers for HP & DH. Normally I don't care, I indulge in spoilers all over the place, but this time I want to try to go into the book blank, I guess just because it's the last one. Only problem is, I didn't pre-order it or make any plan for getting it soon. I'm sort of flailing, now.

I learned to tie a mooring hitch last night, because Eor set me down with instructions and said, "This would be a good one to know for next time we're camping." :) I feel much more piratical already! Well, hey, there IS more to being a pirate than just knowing the difference between walking the plank and keelhauling, right? I should know how to do a few decent knots.

cut so you can ignore the bitching part - it rained a lot and things broke )

However, we slept dry, which as Eor points out is a gigantic accomplishement in torrential rains. We weren't particularly uncomfortable, actually, and we could still have tea and lie in a snug bed reading in the evenings. The hiking went well - I made it up Cannon and back down, although I didn't think I'd be able to when we started up. :) That went really amazingly smoothly. I wore my old sneakers (the ones Looks to Alaska gave me years ago after she had worn them for a summer or so, and they were second-hand when she got them) rather than the expensive hiking boots, and my toes were a bit sore but I had no blisters. (I feel a little guilty about that because I spent so much money on the hiking boots, but they're still good boots for the winter and all.) I need some new sneakers that fit me as well as those old ones.

All in all, I feel happy with the trip. We had some fun, some things went quite well, and the things that didn't we coped with well. And even an imperfect camping trip is miles better than work. ;)

Okay, french toast has been eaten, all we have left to do is dishes and we are bye-bye gone for most of (probably) four days. I really need this mini-vaca. I woke up twice in the night with bad dreams about work.
