Yes, a single slab of wood with a big carved wooden handle, held in by sliding a bit into a slot on the side. And I suppose they did get replaced often, since they said it's rare for an original to have survived. :) They believe it's of the correct age with the house because of the rosette scratched in it, matching the one on the mantle in the other room. Back in the day they would set the door aside, build a fire in the oven, and after it was good and hot they'd rake out the coals and ash and wipe the inside down with a wet ragmop, then put in the food and put the door back on.
