When I first stumbled into the kitchen this morning something caught my eye through the window of the door, across the railroad tracks. A red milkcrate. Since real milkcrates are so hard to come by these days I immediately yanked the door open thinking I would run right over there and grab it, but upon doing so I realized that it was attached to a bicycle. There seems to be another bicycle there, as well. Now it's hours later and they're still there, lying by the railroad track almost in the bushes, in the pouring rain which has been going on since sometime in the night. I can't imagine what might have happened - it makes me wonder if the people riding them were kidnapped or if the bikes were stolen, and I wonder if I should call the police.

ETA: I went over and looked more closely, and I'm no Holmes but my impression is that they were carefully laid down, not just dropped, so I'm thinking pre-teen kids who got distracted and wandered off home on foot, eventually. Or they were offered a ride by someone they knew. Or they stole the bikes from friends as a joke and left them figuring they'd be okay until they were found. They're not going to get run over by the train, just rusty.

There was a bike left behind the village hall for weeks which is just beside our house. I mentioned to my neighbour that if it was still there the next day I was going to take it. Lo and behold next day it was gone! How embarrassing! I must be known in the village as the bike robber now.
