[livejournal.com profile] daegaer has written some lovely fic in which a modern-day Gedge and Bracy, having already been involved and broken up, meet again during a disaster - According to their Kinds. Read, and rejoice in the goodness that is [livejournal.com profile] daegaer. Written for the Day After Tomorrow challenge. [ETA: The only thing I think of in response to this challenge is "The Dolphins of Altair." It's an odd book I read when I was a kid in which the dolphins are the good guys and kill off thousands of humans by setting a heat bomb under the Antarctic ice, flooding a good deal of the world. And since there's a different reason for the disaster it wouldn't work with this challenge at all.]

Of course I hadn't heard about Day After Tomorrow, because I live under a rock, so had no idea what the disaster was, and kept hoping she'd tell me during the story, but it really didn't matter to me that much because I'm always reading apocalyptic/post apocalyptic stories in Asimov's. I'm in it for how the characters respond, not what causes the disaster. But I loved this bit:

'The paper said people are freezing solid in Scotland,' Gedge said stubbornly.

'Well, that's the Scottish summer for you,' Bracy said...

And the damn car is finally inspected, no thanks to the guys at Forest City Chevrolet. This morning I took it to Sears. Half and hour, in and out, done. I still wonder if I should ask Forest City to go ahead and put the car up on the lift and show me exactly what they were talking about as far as the rotors. They offered to do so.

Also, rare sighting of a female mechanic.

While I was waiting for the car I got a cup of coffee and wrote a tiny bit on one of my fics that's been languishing. I think I may have found a trick to inspiring myself on fic writing: Carry around my notebook and a history book... If I absolutely can't write I'll read history, which is good for me. But I'll be more inspired to write if I don't have an interesting story enticing me away. The history book I've got is not bad, though I haven't gotten far, yet. "A Distant Mirror," recommended by [livejournal.com profile] matushan. It's about the 14th century, but concentrates mainly on one knight from a very powerful dynasty, Enguerrand de Coucy.

We had urine tests today. I only got called to do it because the urinalysis people didn't want to wait for the guy with the same initials as me, because he didn't come in until 2pm and they wanted to be gone by then. When he came in someone told him, "Derien peed in a cup for you." :)
