Take small steps, keep balanced, never put your hands in your pockets (that's what gloves are for) because they help you keep your balance if they're out, and reach forward with the foot you don't have your weight on to check your next step before you commit to it. Also WEAR STIFF SOLED SHOES. I cannot stress that enough - sneakers usually are too soft and don't provide the support you need. The actual tread is not as important as the stiffness of the sole, though it's good to have some.
