I've been forced to watch people in their testing for the past couple of days, which is boring to the point of putting me to sleep, literally. It's Practical Skills Evaluation time, so the workers are set a scenario and asked how they will deal with it, but it's all done in a training room, completely out of their normal environment, so it puts people all on edge. Some want to throw up, some get nosebleeds, it's very stressful. Some people deal with stress in a different way. This kid comes in, is given the scenario - (I'll paraphrase): "All the equipment is down, there's no power, and you have to accomplish this task. Do you have any questions?"
"Yes, sir, I have a question."
"Yes?"
"Where is the (X machine)?"
"It's broken. It's in the repair shop. Do you have any other questions?"
"Yes."
"Go ahead."
"Where IS the (X machine)?"
"It's over there! Or over there! Wherever makes you happy! Do you have any further questions?"
"Yes."
"What's your question?"
"Where is the (Y machine)?"
"You just walked by it, right over there! Do you have any further questions??"
"No, sir."
He then proceeded to perform the task extremely quickly, repeating every step at least three times over, to the point where the evaluator glanced over at me and I wondered if he thought I'd put this kid up to this behavior. I couldn't help but laugh after we left the room, and I probably shouldn't have because it just encouraged him. I did say as much, and asked him if he had been beat much as a child.
"Why would you ask something like that!?"
"Because I'm thinking it wasn't enough!"
The kid actually got a perfect score on that particular demonstration, but completely blew the next to, even though he was just as gung-ho acting, and when we discussed it later I had to emphasize that possibly he was concentrating too hard on giving the evaluator a hard time and not paying attention to the task at hand.
He asked the female evaluator where a different machine was, and she said she was the machine, so she handled him a little bit better, possibly. In his last test when asked if he had questions his question was "What time are you guys going to be working until?" I told him later I'd have beat him like a redheaded stepchild if he'd tried to stretch that evaluation out until it was time for them to leave. ;)
I did ask them, before I brought him in, if they were ready for him. Apparently they weren't. ;)
ETA: The beauty of this is, these people can't fire him, they can only give him a bad score, and chances are they'd have found something to fail him on anyway, they fail nearly everyone on something. :)
