Amedia posted about driving in Texas now that the speed limit has gone up to 75, and I was thinking how dangerous that sounded, when I heard that in fact there's a bill that's being considered in Maine to raise the speed limit on 295 (between Portland and Gardiner) to 75. It's currently 65, and I've heard people say that it's considered some of the most dangerous highway in Maine because of the number of accidents that occur. Imho this may have nothing to do with the road itself, but a lot to do with the fact that it's more crowded that most other roads in Maine, and that in the summer there's even more people, and a lot of them are tourists who don't know where they're going. Back when I had to be at work at 11am I formed a habit of leaving an hour early to make my 20-minute drive because there were accidents so often that my Supervisors stopped accepting that as an answer as to why I was late.
Of course the speed limit up North has been 75 for a long time, and they seem to think they drive better, but the roads are so empty that there's usually little for them to run into. Even so, there was a really horrific accident a few years ago in which two mothers and all the kids in both families were wiped out because they were going 90 in an SUV and lost control. Raise the speed limit and the multitude of accidents in the Portland area are going to be much worse accidents.
Even better, they're doing work right now to shorten some of the on ramps that don't have enough accidents. After putting out a bond bill to vote so they could repair bridges. If they have the money to change those on-ramps that are perfectly fine they probably already had the money to repair those bridges, we probably didn't have to put out bonds for that.
