(Damn, it seems I did not post this when I wrote it, yesterday.)

It seems we have a short tailed weasel (aka stoat or ermine). We stepped out of the garage and Eor noticed something moving under the new car (parked on the far side of the drive until we can clear space in the garage). It had just killed a mouse - probably Eor actually saw it in the act of killing the mouse, really - and we got a good look at the mouse because when we looked at it for too long the weasel took off, so we went to see what he'd been about to eat. Eor kicked the mouse out from under the car, and I'm pretty sure that as soon as we walked away the weasel dashed back in and stole his dinner back from us.

I think I might have mentioned there's a brown hawk that I think has a wingspan greater than two feet (I think it's three, but Eor thinks I might be exaggerating), and yesterday we saw that the foot of horrible green water that remains at the bottom of the pool is supporting a very large frog - probably four inches from his nose to his butt. Somehow we're going to have to get him out of there when we completely drain the pool,* but I have no idea where he's going to go. Perhaps we should transport him to the brook at the bottom of the hill, where the kids fish. (It's actually reserved for only kids to fish in.)

And there are birds in our chimney. Eor thought I was crazy because I was complaining about a rumbling noise - he couldn't hear it, because where he sits he's around the corner from the fireplace. It's their wings causing air turbulence in the enclosed space. At least I think that's what it is! If not, we have a ghost who drags a ghostly chair around.

Oh, in reading news - I am attempting to read "Railsea" by China Meiville, but instead I seem to be re-reading "Standish" by Erastes.

*We finally got to talk to the Code Enforcement Officer at the town hall. Very pleasant woman, and she seems to have no problem at all with any of the things we are talking about doing. $25 covers us for two years with her. Which means filling in the pool will happen soon. Getting rid of the dangerous, mosquito-producing hole in the ground is something I'm looking forward to, although I'm sure I'm not looking forward to the work of doing it.
