Oh, to correct some things - I was totally wrong when I said Eor ordered new hub assemblies for my car. He looked at them, reported to me that they would be around $100 each, and from that I gathered he had ordered them, but what he decided to do instead was take the old hubs apart and see what was going on with the brake junk inside. Night before last I made a run to an auto parts store for him (in the dark and the rain, driving his new Fiat) and picked up a set of drum brake shoes. So, for $24 and a LOT of hard work on his part we avoided spending that $200. Which is a good thing, but I felt so awful for him, coming home from a long day of work looking like he really needed to relax and then he put on that coverall and made himself go out there in the not so warm garage.

But hey, at least we have a garage, now, which I know he thinks of as a major step up in the car repair thing. Another example of "It's easier to save money if you already have some money." Doing your own car repair no place to work and inadequate tools is even less fun.

Speaking of tools, I did think it was funny - I was musing as I held the backing pin for him to put a little spring over it "Isn't it lucky he has just the tool for inserting that little spring. Oh, wait, that tool is actually the handle to one of the jacks... isn't it?" A minute later, as if he'd heard my thoughts, he said, "I learned that trick of putting in that brake spring with the handle of the floor jack many years ago. These brake springs haven't changed since at least 1956. For all I know they might have been the same since 1920."
