Photographic evidence to try to explain my last entry.

This is a random proper Federal...

This is our house...

Notice how the right hand chimney is a little far to the right and set back, you can see that the peak of the roof is in front of it?

Now here is the side of our house...

(Ignore the horrific garage attached on the right.) Note the sort of blank-looking area where there are no windows? That's where the original Half-Colonial would have ended. On my screen it almost looks as if there's a color shift on the left, there, where it goes into the newer part, but that is not the case in real life, as it's probably been resided and certain painted a number of times since the front part was built. It's the spirit of the old part of the house exerting itself. ;)

Compare to a proper Colonial...

Eliminate the growths they've put on the ends, and consider only the left hand side of the house, make the door less grand and shove it over under the third window, and then check if that isn't the side of our house.

Colonials and Federals are not much different from each other. Federal has a flatter roof as a general rule, really bad in our climate.

The irregularity of the spacing between the windows on the second floor make me think there could even have been an older shape. ETA: Just had a conversation with Eor about this, and he points out that if the gap between the windows were even on the top floor the window above the door would be offset and that would look wrong. People would notice. Okay, that makes sense to me.
