Krazy Kat (or, "I am 100 years behind the times")

I guess the first Krazy Kat strip, was April 23rd 1916. So this is over a hundred years old, and I've only seen a few references to it. I mean, I knew it existed, but never had the chance to actually look at any full strips until now. Bill Waterson somehow read these as a kid and called them one of his biggest influences with Calvin and Hobbes. Why did I never see these before??

Krazy Kat

He's crazy because he doesn't do anything a cat would. He adores the mouse, Ignatz, even though Ignatz has it in for him. Krazy interprets all of Ignatz's attacks as signs of love, and refers to him as 'darling' and 'little angel'. Maybe that was why I didn't hear of him? Suppressed because HUGE HOMO VIBE OMG? Although I hear that sometimes Krazy randomly is referred to as female, so maybe it's huge trans vibe, also?
