I was born and raised in Maine, as were my ancestors to probably the 5th generation.

What do you call...
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?

A brook.

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store?

shopping cart, occationally 'wagon.'

3. A metal container to carry a meal in?

lunchbox.

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?

fry pan. I've also heard my grandparents and parents call a cast-iron fry pan a 'spider.'

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?

couch or sofa. (If it seats only two it's a loveseat.)

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?

gutter.

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?

porch.

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?

soda

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?

pancake.

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?

(As we discussed) an italian. (some people pronounce it 'eye-talien,' but my parents told me that was rude.)

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?

swim trunks.

12. Shoes worn for sports?

sneakers.

13. Putting a room in order?

neatening up.

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?

lightning bug.

15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?

I've no idea. Pillbug, perhaps? But I don't know as that's regional for here, I learned it as an adult. In fact I think I learned it from eor referring to my cat as "Paula Pillbug" when she's curled up tight.

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?

see-saw or teeter-totter.

17. How do you eat your pizza?

with my fingers, holding it flat. (I think they're looking for some people curling the pizza slices up, perhaps?)

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?

lawn sale.

19. What's the evening meal?

When I was a kid it was always supper.

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

cellar (sulla)

21. That plant that kids throw at each other because it sticks to clothing?

burrdock, or burr for short.

22. Those little balls of froth on plants in spring, which contain some moth or other's eggs?

spit.

23. Girls' lower-half underwear?

underwear.

24. Boys' lower-half underwear?

underwear.

24. The cloth you had when you were little and always slept with, and perhaps sucked your tongue with?

blankey - I don't think I had one.

25. Warm knitted top typically made of wool?

Sweater. (eor calls a sweatshirt a sweater, too - I found that rather confusing at first.)

26. Baked in an oven, made of flour, butter, an egg, milk:

Something I can't eat. *pout* I don't know what the survey is looking for, but it's probably a cake or brownies.

27. A single thistledown seed flying free.

I have no word for that, it's just there.
