Well that last entry didn't quite work the way I intended it to, but good enough.

Here's the outline for my latest story; tell me if you think it will be believable. A fanatically religious ruler is considering amending the constitution of his country to conform to his own beliefs, and at the same time a much-hyped movie comes out which goes straight for the emotions, bypassing the little grey cells entirely, and supports his odd religious views. A poll being taken by a major news website changes overnight. One day it's showing people highly in favor of the constitution remaining the way it is, the next day the opinion is quickly moving toward changing the constitution.

"Passion of Christ" has been hyped in some odd ways, including spam on the journals of biblical scholars who post manly stories. Hm.

And I had to work the day yesterday with a guy who saw the movie and was soooo incredibly moved by it that he "hasn't gotten out of his Bible since." He raved about what an experience it was, and for a short while I was thinking maybe I should actually see it just so I can understand what's so cool about it to him and people who think like him. Then I thought back to [livejournal.com profile] afrai's statement that "Jesus didn't go to all the trouble of going around the country and healing people and replicating fish and giving talks and getting crucified just so's you could sit on your fanny and say, ooh, as long as I do and think and say what the Bible tells me to everything will be okay, so I never have to use those pesky neurons again. The purpose of your religion is not to turn you into a POTATO." I know that propaganda which purposely yanks the emotions does so in order to bypass the thinking part of your brain. And besides, the movie is supposed to be quite violent. I'll probably yawn a lot and finish up saying "there's 3 hours of my life I won't get back."

[livejournal.com profile] eor experienced a similar rave-by-touched-coworker yesterday. Herewith follows just a snippet of the ensuing conversation this morning, the bit about parables...

Eor began a modernized parable; "There was this Iraqi walking along the road and he found a Jew in the ditch and he helped him."
I responded "It doesn't matter if it's true, it could have been."
"He was a story-teller!" said Eor, " Do we expect Heinlein to be 'true'? Or, to put it another way, it's like word problems in math class. Do we think there really was a boy named Billy who had three apples??"
Ah well, I'm sure I can't do it justice, but I laughed my butt off at the time.:)
