So I went to L-Space looking for information about Bloody Stupid Johnson, because I was wondering if he might have been based on an actual person named Capability Brown who's name I came across in a book on architecture and gardens, and I ran across The Legend of the Holy Anorankh, an ank wearing an anorak, symbol of involuntary celibacy:

Unfortunately Clarecraft closed up shop three years ago, so getting any kind of Holy Anorankh is impossible, now. I can't even find a picture of what they produced. Oh, wait! Here!

Meanwhile I'm reading one of Kage Baker's "Company" series, 'The Graveyard Game.' This one is mostly concerning Joseph and Lewis, and I had almost forgotten how much I love them. I kind of want Joseph/Lewis. :) I can't figure out how it could be done, but I'm only a quarter of the way through the book, so maybe it will be easy later on. There is a slight drawback in that Lewis is madly (though unrequitedly) in love with Joseph's "daughter" (recruit, actually), Mendoza. But I can hardly believe in his crush, because Lewis has such a queer vibe in just about every story I've read with him.

Okay, I guess I need more tea and to get my ass to the laundromat. Much to do, today, as we're going camping tonight. (Therefore, of course, it's raining, and in the area we're going to there are flash flood warnings.)

But do anoraks have the same stigma attached to them in America? I need to know because there's a Swedish nazi black metal band with the unfortunate name of Anorak, and the hilarity of that fact is only apparent if you fully appreciate what anoraks mean!!

I think anorak means "ancestry" in Swedish or something, but that doesn't stop me laughing at the dumdasses who inadvertently named their oh-so-serious band after the jacket of trainspotters.

No, not at all - which was the source of the whole joke, preserved at the page I linked to. This American who was on the alt.fan.pratchett list thought that 'anorak' was the English word for 'ankh.' :)

I suppose the word has a... kind of strange spelling to it. Maybe it looks a bit mystical? No, no I think it's just a non-English (but non-mysticl) name for a jacket.

Of all the intenet in-jokes I've ever seen I think this takes the crown of weirdness. Actually I must thank you because a girl on my flist was talking about laughing about a guy she say wearing an ankh the other day and I was thinking "what, ankhs are bad now?", and now that I think of it, she also mentioned anoraks. I thought she was either going mad, or I was missing something. I should have known.
