We had a lovely visit with [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead and [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl yesterday, and bored them probably near to tears with talking about houses, since it's the only topic in our heads at the moment. Thankfully they have at least a professional interest in such topics. :) We drove over to Wiscasset with them, in the snow, and did drivebys of the house we looked at on Saturday and a few others, including one which someone else they know is seriously considering buying (very pretty!). And we found a bookstore in the town, which is at least something. So now we know what we'd be doing if we lived there - haunting the bookstore. ;) [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead also recommended The Sunken Garden, in the summer. I guess someone decided to transform an old house foundation into a park, which sounds kind of cool. :)

Maybe I'm being uncharitable and spoiled from living in Portland. You can't have Indian and Thai restaurants and indie music stores and odd little live music venues and coffee shops everywhere in Maine. Locals don't go out in the winter (too tired from shoveling snow) and tourists don't use that sort of thing. One restaurant, one bookstore, and an interesting public park is probably pretty good, really. And being so much nearer [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl and [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead would be very nice.

Meanwhile, though, we've nearly convinced ourselves on the condo in Freeport. It's so gorgeous, and would not require work. The condo fees pay for plowing, mowing, painting, roof work, sewer, water and hot water, so our only extra expenses would be heat and taxes. It's nice to have your money clearly planned out like that. Quite a few decent restaurants (not great like Portland or Brunswick, but, yes, better than the one restaurant in Wiscasset) in walking distance, and the Freeport Free Concerts within walking distance in the summer.

No garage, no outdoor space for gardening (yeah, I have no sticktoitevness on that, but I want to dig in the dirt every spring.) and no turning the music up. But, beautiful kitchen all ready to go, and no appliances to buy! (I'm kind of a little leery on that, because the appliances are all electric, and I'd prefer to at least cook on gas, but they're all new and lovely.) Maybe I can do pot gardening on the porch and the deck.

Oh, damn it. I'm talking about this again. And thinking about it, and making myself crazy and boring everyone else. Decision making processes suck! Especially when it's between the two halves of my brain that represent city mouse and country mouse. Wiscasset seems like a sort of small town/suburbia compromise between the two which will leave both halves unsatisfied. Not really a good space for gardening, because it's on too steep a slope. It's got the pluses of a garage and the possibility of increasing in value because of the work we can do on it, which don't seem like much in return for all the varying expenses of a house and the long commute.

Crap, I really need to get my bath and breakfast and do some dishes and stop thinking about this for the love of god. My car needs shoveling out.

But in more important news, [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl and [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead's new kitten is just about the cutest thing ever! :D
