I have my computer back! Everything is weird and different looking, even down to different colors for the icons for logging off or turning off, and there's still a lot of work to do sorting what's gone and renaming that which isn't really gone, just hasn't got a name. Poor Eor has worked his tail off trying to recover it for me since Thursday morning, when it suddenly decided to shit the bed. I feel horrible about this happening just when he had managed to finnagle a couple of days off; I know he really needs/needed down time, and now it's back to work tomorrow. I can't even tell you how grateful I am to him, it's just... God. So much work.
His initial thought was that I'd gotten a virus, but later he decided it must have been that when my license for CA Antivirus ran out it tried to uninstall itself and screwed up the boot sector of the disk, then Windows flailed horribly and destroyed stuff at random. That'll learn me. I need to learn how to make proper backups. There will be a lot unrecoverable, and this is like chunks of my life, since I have no memory.
