What I did end up getting for Eightball, (the guy who has nothing and no place to put it):
Gift certificate to LL Bean (because with Eor's employee discount, Eightball gets $70 worth of stuff and I only spend less than $47. I'm not cheap, I'm practical.)
Bookmark with Buddhist quote on it. (I wish I'd written the quote down.)
magnet (with 1950s photo of kid digging in a picnic basket - "Where is the prize in this stupid happy meal?")
black Guatemalan change purse
Book of social/political facts and ads from his birth year.
The book came with an envelope, obviously intended to send as you would a birthday card, which gave me the idea to get a bunch of flat things to hide between the pages. One of my major problems was never being able to get to the Post Office, so the flat theme allowed me to put it out as I would any letter, which was a huge advantage. :)
It seems to have been a success - at least he says it was cool, and send me a picture of him opening it. :)
Also, last night we watched "The Princess Bride" for the first time. :) At least I'm still reasonably sure it was the first time for me, and Eor is certain. A friend of ours invited us to her place, we ordered Indian food from Haggerty's (Brit-Indian food is available in Portland, yay!). The food was delish, the movie perfect, the company superb. :)
