I have no idea why we elected LePage. Maine has a long tradition of having a nut or two in the gubernatorial race, and when interviewed before the election people like to pretend they might vote for them, but generally when it comes down to it they vote for someone who sounds sensible. LePage never sounded sensible and no sensible person thought he had a chance of winning the election. He's referred to the NAACP as 'a special interest group' who he can't be bothered with because he has a whole state full of people he has to focus on (apparently Real People have no special interests) and a couple of days later was out holding hands with the anti-abortionists on the state house lawn. Because they are not special interest, no.
Over this weekend he removed a mural about Labor from the Department of Labor office. This mural was painted for the Department of Labor years ago, but he has decided it's 'inappropriate' and 'distracts' the workers in the office from their job. Because apparently their job is creating compromise between labor and business, not to aid and defend labor, as it apparently used to say on it's website, according to some people. (Now it says "Serving Maine Workers and Businesses." No telling what it used to say last week.) Because apparently the Department of Commerce and the Department of Economic and Community Developement can't manage to defend the rights and interests of business well enough. Apparently that mural was keeping businesses away from Maine and they'll come flocking in now that it's gone.
I really should have been keeping a log of LePage's offenses.

Do you know what the tories were discussing a few weeks ago? Banning May Day as a bank holiday to prevent workers' celebrations and demonstrations! Outrageous! They'd never get away with it though.

And how many people really demonstrate, anyway? I'd think most people would be happy to have a day out of work in the spring after being trapped indoors with the weather getting nicer, though I guess it's possible that spirits might run a little high. :)
