13) "Ship of Destiny" - Robin Hobb
Why does she choose these melodramatic covers and titles? An enjoyable book, feels a bit dated. I could come up with a plethora of complaints, but then it would sound as if I didn't enjoy the book, and in fact I did. It kept me picking it up, enthralled. It was a fun yarn.

Amber could have been toned down. Or removed. Her portentousness was a bit pretentious. A bit Mary Sue. A bit like a character I conceived when I was a pre-teen. I'm embarrassed.

I wonder if we've passed a sort of point in our understanding of feminism where anything that makes a big deal of women doing "men's" jobs sounds just rather dated? I did like the contrast that the Trader's society was going through a slow drift where women had previously been independent and the fashion was to show off your wealth by not letting the women work. It was an interesting thought on how things can go from good to bad.

But then the evil country where all the men were rapists... was that necessary?

And then the guy who did so much good and so much evil, seemingly at random. I really couldn't get my head around the point of him.
