49) "The Magic of Oz" - Baum
First we start out following the Bad Boy, Kiki Aru. (Wait, Kiki? Isn't that a bisexual girl's name? I was a little confused by Prince Inga, too. Honestly I think Baum only ever wanted to write about girls, he just felt he had to do some boy stories, so he gave them girl names.) Kiki learns how to transform himself and others, and sets off into the world with this one skill and a desire to be Bad, and he quickly meets Ruggedo, who used to be king of the Nomes, who has been reformed twice in previous books, but seems to keep reverting to Bad. He decides they can take over Oz with Kiki's power to transform people.
Meanwhile, back at the palace, everyone has to find birthday presents for Ozma, so they all set off in different directions on Quests. Dorothy and the Wizard go in search of some monkeys, because what's cuter than a bunch of monkeys who will jump out of a cake and do tricks? They go to the jungle in the Gillikin country and meet up with Kiki and Ruggedo, who have transformed themselves into weird creatures to avoid offending any of the jungle animals. In a spate of nerves, Kiki transforms Dorothy into a lamb, the Wizard into a fox, and the (male) panther who rules this jungle into a fat woman. A fat woman? Yeah, I don't know.
I remembered so much of this one as I went along, particularly around the pictures, again. Especially the part where Trot and Cap'n Bill are stuck on the island of the flower (it's a trap intended to kill people! Why it was set and who set it, not discussed.) and are randomly given mushrooms to sit on by a passing magical duck. Magical duck? Why not.
It's just kind of whacked, all in all, but fun. :)
