I'm listening to the audio book of Blue Remembered Earth (Poseidon's Children) by Alastair Reynolds, which I chose only because it's read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith . Now, I'm not done with it, yet, so there's always time for Mr. Reynolds to surprise me, and maybe some of these plot holes are going to be plugged (it is, after all, a mystery of sorts, so perhaps they're all clues) but I think I would have lost interest long before now if not for Mr. Holdbrook-Smith's vocal work. The characters are mostly just cranky ass and their knee-jerk reactions (for all of them!) are to lie or prevaricate and to be pissy and sarchastic while doing so.
But the point which actually got me to post, the most annoying thing to me... The one character is a biologist who researches elephants. His elephants are the M group. The O group is mentioned, and by implication there must at least have been an L group, right? If they're designated, his are not the only elephants in Africa, and he's probably not the only biologist studying them, right? So, why, when he goes off to do something, does he have to get someone who's NOT an elephant biologist to look in on them? Our local cow farmers have reciprocal relationships where they take care of each other's cows temporarily while one or another is out of commission. Pretty sure biologists probably do the same thing in real life. So, this guy is rich and has an old family retainer who steps in for him, and maybe he never needed to develope those relationships? But terribly unforesightful of him.
