I'm going to ComiCon in New York City! I was talking with a coworker and she said she was trying to get out early on October 8 so she could drive down to her mother's place in Massachusetts, as a staging point for her trip to ComiCon, and I expressed my envy that she was going, and she said "Would you like to go with me?" She bought a ticket for her sister, who doesn't want to go.
The only reason this is a muted squee is there are some logistical problems for me. She had no trouble getting the last hour of her shift off the day before, but my request for Monday off (for the trip back) was denied, so I have to find someone who wants to take my hours. There are at least six people I know of who I can offer the hours to, and said fannish coworker has also offered to do a three-way swap if I can't get someone to simply take the day. Which is very sweet of her! Basically, if I have to offer up a day in return in order to get someone to work on Monday, she suggested I make it a Sunday offered up, and then she will work that Sunday for me.
The piece I have taken on is planning our travel. I never imagined it would be so hard. I seem to go at things the hardest way. I mean, give me any task and I will find the hardest way to do it. I thought it would be 'easy' to find Javits Center, then the nearest train stations, then which of those trains we might want. Well. Javits Center has a "Getting here" page, which I found after only 20 minutes or so. They say that an Amtrak train stops at 34th St/Penn Station. I can see that station on the map. I can input station names on the Amtrak schedule. Every variation I try says "enter a valid station". I found a list of Amtrak stations. Every Penn Station I've found maps to someplace four hours away from Javits Center. What the actual f-ing f is wrong with public transit in the United States? Why can this not be easy? It's like Florida's unemployment compensation website - as though it's designed to be an f-ing pain in the ass.
Ah, here we go - Amtrak has a function where you can look up a train station code by the zip code of the neighborhood. A little digging and I see that Javits Center is zip code 10001. That maps on the Amtrak site to... West Palm Beach, Florida.
F me.
I need to do other things today. But at least I walked on the treadmill for 25 minutes or something like, probably in sheer frustration. ;) Watched Futurama. Always a balm. I think I may need to start reading another Swallows and Amazons book after this. (They are very calming.)
