Well, the last couple of days have been fun but tiring. Got up at 0330 on Friday and drove to NH to get Hawk for a whistle stop tour around Maine. Hawk drove from Laconia to Rockland, we visited with Aunt BJ - what an absolutely LOVELY time! Awesome and delightful conversation there with her and Aunt S. Four is supposed to be the prime number for a conversation - enough to keep it perking and not so many that it breaks up into separate conversations. And the weather cooperated, as well, so we got to sit out on her patio with a gentle breeze in the flower-scented air looking out over the lake. Gracious living.

Then Jim and I grabbed Aunt S. and looped her into our crazy road trip. We drove back to Portland and went to dinner at a tiny Cambodian food stall in an upstairs space on Monument Square, where the delightful proprietor told us stories of being taught how to cook by her mother ("she would tell me to taste something and then tell her what spices were in it, and if I got it wrong she would hit my hand with a wooden spoon and tell me not to be so stupid."), and then we went to see Reverend Horton Heat, who's an amazingly energetic rock guitarist in his 60s.

We didn't sleep barely at all - especially, I'm afraid, Aunt S, who said she was too wired up from going to her first rock concert at 72 years old - and got up at 0600 to take Jim back to Laconia, with a quick stop (of about an hour, I think) with cousin DD. We had intended to just give her a hug, but then we had to cuddle her baby goats and talk about goats and family and goats for a while. :)

In Laconia we visited with Hawk's delightful inlaws, K and her husband J; these guys always make me feel like I'm learning a thing or two. :) We got to see the kids, but the little Miss Longshanks and her cousin F. were pretty involved with each other and didn't have a ton of time for adults, though I did get treated to the story of the grill bursting into flame, and how tiny toads had been caught and released.

I began the drive back around 3:30 or 4pm, and maaaan was I tired. We only went as far as my place that day, only two hours drive. When I went to bed I slept from like 10 to 7, got up and peed and went back to sleep until 0830.

Made pancakes for breakfast and we got back on the road again around 1130 or noonish to get Aunt S back to Rockland for her grandnephew's birthday party. By the time I got back home, around 5:15pm today, my arms hurt from driving. But it's been great. :) Glad I have family who like road trips!
