It was probably just one major landowner in the area who went ahead and registered the name, because there isn't even anything that resembles a town, there. Real estate agents are trying to kill that name - they're referring to the area as North Yarmouth (Although North Yarmouth is actually rather to the west) or South Pownell or East Crockett Corner.
I thought so, and so did Eor - back when we were looking for houses he did special searches for Sodom and found that there will NEVER be a house listed there. Misery Gore, Maine also seems to be a township that may have existed at one time, but we suspect real estate agents of killing it.
