Even if they are underemployed, as well. My friend "Mary" came down to visit today, and it cheered me up SO much just to sit around and talk with her - she's totally great.:) We debated the possibility of collaborating on porn stories or romance novels as a way to make money.:) She says if we move to New Orleans she'll consider moving down there, too. She's feeling a little bummed with Portland and thinks a change of scene would be nice. That would be just too cool if we could be hanging together in NO.

Change is good. It sounds like it's the right time for you and Matt to move to a new environment. If you're both out of work and are unable or disinterested in finding work where you are, that's probably a good sign that it's time to move on. It's scary, that's for sure, but you're smart and resourceful, you'll do just fine wherever you end up.
