I was doing handwanding and bagsearching incessantly for most of the shift - when I got a chance to sit at the exit for a half hour I sat staring like a zombie, enjoying the feel of the sweat cooling on the back of my neck. You don't think of that sort of work as a workout, but we were really cranking.
And that after we started out the day with a briefing from our Director... The TSA has to cut 3,000 screeners before the end of this month from the smaller airports, and another 3,000 in September to but cut from the larger airports. The airport I work in, previously considered to be 100 screeners short, is now estimated as 30 screeners too high, so 30 of us have to go before the end of this month. They suppose many of those will be through attrition. This seems unlikely, since we've only had 11 people leave in the past 8 months. Of course, before we all felt we were working together toward a goal of keeping people safe, we were hanging on through all the rather shoddy treatment we were getting from the government because we thought things would straighten out, soon... So now that we've found out better, people probably _will_ drop like flies. This is a complete slap in the face. Our Director says he will not compromise security if they cut his workforce. He'd rather let the lines get long and tell us all to concentrate on each and every passenger and do the job right. This means the lines will get _loooong_ and people will get cranky at us. That will fucking suck. So, everyone, if you're not into meditating in long lines at the airport, write your Senator and tell them not to cut TSA jobs.;)

I absolutely am not blaming you or any of the screeners for the lines. It's just I know of people (not me, and not in Portland) who have arrived at an airport two hours ahead of time and missed their flight, partially because of long security lines. Of course, some of that problem comes from inept ticket agents before you even get to the security screening. But still, that is SO F'ING DUMB.
Olympia and Susan are gonna get really sick of hearing from me. I've been writing them an awful lot of letters in the past few months.
