When we arrived home on Saturday night (not long before midnight, after a wonderful evening with [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead and [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl! :)) I found a package from my brother, Hawk.

As soon as I finished "HMS Surprise" I started reading "Once Upon A Time In The North" by Phillip Pullman, which I borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead and is about Lee Scoresby when he's 24, and how he met Iorek. :) So far the writing is remarkably flat and clunky - passable, but only just. Like he phoned it in. Which might be why [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl's brother didn't like it until he was halfway through it, but then apparently he went back and read it a second time, so it must not be all that bad.

40) "One Upon A Time In The North" - Philip Pullman. Although it's bound in it's own cover, this is a novella and I guess therefore technically a short story, but I'll cheat and claim it as a book, even though it took me only a few hours to read. It's a very pretty little book, with nice pictures and interesting bits and pieces to give an impression of a fully created world (including some letters at the end from Lyra when she's at college). The plot is simple and tied up a little patly at the end, and the writing is mostly uninspiring, but the story is fun and Lee Scoresby, Hester and Iorek are characters I couldn't get enough of in the original book, so it was a joy to read.

(Sorry I'm spamming flists, today. It's a huge danger of being home all day. But maybe it's better than making gigantic posts, I don't know.)
