As soon as I finished "HMS Surprise" I started reading "Once Upon A Time In The North" by Phillip Pullman, which I borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] littleredhead and is about Lee Scoresby when he's 24, and how he met Iorek. :) So far the writing is remarkably flat and clunky - passable, but only just. Like he phoned it in. Which might be why [livejournal.com profile] groundctrl's brother didn't like it until he was halfway through it, but then apparently he went back and read it a second time, so it must not be all that bad.

Aww, it's a shame to hear that. I loved Northern Lights so much I started re-reading it immediately after finishing it. I must read the rest of those books actually...

I just finished it - obviously, it's not long, more like a long short story than a regular novel - and it's fun. A cute little story at any rate. They even padded out with elaborate pictures and "reproductions" of information supporting the feel of the world, including some letters between Lyra and a couple of different people when she's at college about her dissertation, and there's a board game in a pocket in the back of the book.
