Here's the anecdote I've been wanting to post for the last couple of days and hadn't gotten around to...
Thursday evening at the end of the night it's very quiet in the airport. I was on walk-through-metal-detector observing a young man in full desert camo gear saying goodbye to his families and/or friends, and idly wondering (since there was nothing else to look at - I have to look straight ahead and they were directly in front of me) what relationship they all had to him. My initial assessment was Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother, but that changed when the soldier hugged the young guy who was seeing him off and kissed him on the neck. I was surprised, because I see the neck as a pretty intimate place to kiss. But I sort of decided maybe he'd just got carried away for a second, being on his way out, and, erm, maybe I'd miss-seen that somehow. He then kissed the girl on the lips, and I decided that even though it wasn't the most slobbery kiss she probably wasn't his sister. Then he turned to the young man again, grabbed him by the chin, looked into his face for a second, and then went for a cheek kiss. The young man seemed a bit uncomfortable, which is maybe why he went for the cheek kiss, though I couldn't tell if that was because it was in public and I was obviously watching them. He didn't pull away, and his overriding emotion seemed to be sadness that his friend was leaving.
So... girlfriend and boyfriend? Very demonstrative family? Or had the soldier seen the LOTR trilogy 14 times and decided manly kissing between friends should come back in fashion? I guess it doesn't matter to me, it's all good - at least I got to watch.;)
