Worked in checked baggage today. What luck for me - word was the tension at the checkpoint was thick enough to cut with a knife. Which is just dumb, there was no need for that, because even though they got a ridiculously high number of selectees it was not, over all, a particularly busy day. It all has to do with who's the supervisor du jour, although I'm not sure I should go into the details, here. CG, NotVery, CL and I had a discussion as to how to deal with this. CG thinks our Director is a fair man and will listen if we ask him to meet with the leads and screeners regarding bad management practices by supervisors. He often comes in and asks us if we have any 'bitches, gripes and complaints,' but he always does it when the Supervisors and Managers are present, so people don't want to say anything. CG thinks that if one person would stand up and ask him to have the Supervisors and Managers leave the room that would make it possible for the rest of us to speak to him. I think any person who stood up and asked that would have a target painted on their back after that. (Or, [livejournal.com profile] eor said, probably just be fired for being gay.) CG argued that the whistle-blower policy would protect them. I personally don't think that policy would do them a bit of good, and I'm not honestly sure that I trust our Director is that fair a man. CG does seem to me to often be rather naive. He doesn't seem to concieve of the layers of duplicity that people can actually have. Of course I probably didn't either at his age, but 10 more years has seen me kicked a bit more.

I'm wondering if I should write to the Ombudsman and ask how to deal with this. Of course the last time anyone passed around the Ombudsman's address she got written up for doing so, which I've got to think is purely wrong.
