CNN carries the odd news that pundits scored Bush only a little below Kerry, while the CNN clicking audience scored Kerry as a much clearer winner. (At least as of when I looked at it first thing this morning. It may have changed by the time you look at it. I think the Quick Vote poll, here has changed since 6AM.)

Maybe we feel differently than most people because we listened to it on the radio rather than watching it on TV (our Shiny Thing feed isn't hooked up), so we weren't distracted by the differences in their visual presentation. One of the commentators, right after the debate last night, said that Bush looked at the camera more, so probably made a better feeling of connection with the audience, whereas Kerry spoke to the moderator.

Without visual distraction it was impossible not to notice how halting Bush was, how rattled he sounded, and his rather narrow repertoir of words and points to harp on. He would try to drag the conversation back by repeating the same complaints (with very little variation in his words) over and over, which I thought sounded rather on the whiny side. Kerry was much smoother, and ready with something to say, even if, occasionally, the first thing he said didn't directly address the question (he'd sometimes use a bit of time on the previous question to get going and then pause for a moment to think about the current question).

Transcripts are here, but I think they cleaned up a lot of Bush's stammering. The video seems relatively complete, so you can listen to that with your monitor turned off for the radio effect.:) Their slideshow is too chopped to be of any use. I was not impressed with the "fact checker" section on the very first point and didn't read further. (CNN claims Kerry implied that Bush would only give tax cuts to the rich. I heard him say that rich people like Bush and himself would be the first ones to get cuts under Bush, and we know that's a true statement, as the majority of cuts Bush has made in the past have most profited the rich.)

I'm, of course, not the undecided audience which debates are reaching for. I don't like Bush and never have.

I was not impressed with Ms. Magazine. They sent out a spam this morning asking people to respond to a poll on the debate, but in order to get the results of the poll you apparently have to donate money to Ms. As if. And when I chose to give them no personal information or money they shuttled me to a page where all the links were broken.

I need to go think about something useful, to clear my head of all this politics. Something edifying and pure. Like Jeeves/Wooster slash. There, I can feel my brain mellowing out already. :) I think I'll go read LJ for a while.

First person I spoke to today about it said, "It was close - Bush didn't win by much."

In the news out here Kerry was proclaimed the sure winner. They also had quotes from news media in the USA stating that.

The parts I saw of the debate, Kerry was coming over really strong, Bush was having pauses, was stammering, but when he talked he talked in full lines. So... I dunno, its all depending on the next two I guess.
