I went for a little walk, because it was a warm day, here (it's 30 °F / -1 °C right now, but it was a few degrees warmer when the sun was up).  Things were melting.  You could now see some tar on our road, if you were here to look at it, which hasn't been visible in a while.  People were sitting out on their steps and benches - reading the paper or just hanging around.  Coat and had and mittens of course, for sitting still, but just to be able to not have to rush to the car and get to another indoor place, or have to be moving every minute you're outside - it's nice. :)

* * *

I was going to talk about some of the other conversations we use to amuse ourselves at work.  I'm sure most of these are standard things people talk about, but I just got thinking about the categorizations on Friday.  It's like Maslow's hierarchy of needs:  either anecdotes or general discussion about Housing, Clothing, Food (and Drink), Money, Work, Relationships (both romantic and family).  And Teasing Each Other.

The other day one of my co-workers - I'll call her Liza, because "Pride and Prejudice" is one of her favorite books - was telling us about painting the bathroom in the apartment she's going to be moving in to.  Anecdote about Housing.  But it segued into Teasing.  She has three guys in their thirties who she's moving in with (she's in her twenties) but she has her own bathroom, so she decided to paint her bathroom a cotton candy pink, which she demonstrated the color of by showing us where she'd spattered it all over both sides of her cellphone.  She also admitted to having spattered it all over the tub.  The sink.  Eventually she admitted to including the floor, ceiling and mouldings.

"I guess I'll have to repaint them."

"You know there is such a thing as masking tape."

"I know, and I bought some, but then I didn't use it."

And then plugging the sink to wash her paintbrush, getting distracted by painting more, and letting the sink flood over a LOT.  The floor was covered with water, to a depth which damaged the new paint at the bottom of the walls, before she noticed, unplugged the sink and turned off the water (in that order, I think).  She started throwing towels down, but suddenly the water all disappeared.  So, she checked to see if her future roommates were awake... they weren't, so she bolted.  And hadn't been back for two days.

My reaction: "Oh good.  So there's probably a paintbrush hardened to the floor, too."

Her eyes widened.  "Oh..."

Then MH got started.  "You know there was probably some poor guy on the toilet downstairs with pink water dribbling on his head.  He went to work the next day and his boss fired him for having pink hair."

When I told him, [livejournal.com profile] eor said that was good for at least a week of teasing.  I said I didn't want to tease the poor girl too much, as she might stop telling us these delightful stories. :)

We've had the warmest winter. It's only frozen for a couple of days en nothing really serious. Some of out plants in our back yard have even started budding and it's still January. Weird.

Are you staying here for a while?

I'm leaving on Saturday. I'm here on a business trip - my company is owned by Delhaize. I'm really enjoying it so far, although I'm a bit uncomfortable with the fact that I don't speak the language. I feel like quite the ugly American. :)

Heh, I use English wherever I go. Well, wherever that isn't Flanders or the Netherlands. ^_^ It's just so much easier.
