Well, huh. I just realized that the last post I was composing - to tell everyone I might not be around for a couple of days - never got posted. Guess what, I wasn't around for couple of days. Bet you didn't notice.
Thursday night was Phoebe's birthday party, and day two of rain and wind steadily increased to horizontal. When I left the party I realized I was almost out of gas, went to the nearest gas station, where their weighted garbage cans were skittering around in the wind, and just as I was trying to get my card to work the transformer across the road blew up (maybe by getting hit by something). I got back in the car (and it took all my strength to pull the door closed!) and limped on fumes a half mile up the road where there was a station with power. It was a bit hair-raising.
Wednesday and Thursday we were happy we'd gotten the sump pump in just in time. Thursday night, probably just after I went to bed (11:30 - Eor was sound asleep when I got home) the power went out. So, Friday morning we had no way to shower and cook. I went down to inspect the situation with a flashlight - several inches of water on the basement floor. The sump pump hole had been popped out the day before - stupid design, a plastic bucket with no holes in it - so Eor had drilled holes and stuffed it back in, but was unable to get it all the way down. Still, with no power and no battery backup it wasn't able to do anything all night Thursday. Luckily the water didn't get up to the water heater or things might have been much worse.
So Friday I took myself out for breakfast and got to work early. Friday night I ended up working late - an 11.5 hour shift - so no LiveJournal for me that night, either. Came home and crashed like a falling log and couldn't wake up until like 7:30 on Saturday morning. At which time Eor had already been working down in the basement for about two hours.
I still have red spots on my knees from Saturday morning - kneeling on the gravel digging the hold deeper for the sump pump. Eor would put the shovel in and get it under the edge of the rock we needed to take out, I would hammer the shovel deeper, he would pry at it for a bit, then I would try to get the claws of the hammer under it and he would pry at that a bit. All in several inches of muddy water. Eventually we got the rock out in parts. I also trenched the ditches deeper and wider. Eor spent most of the day pulling down old wires and wire hangers and other rusty things hanging from the beams down there threatening to hook people's eyes out. And labeling wires, which is hard overhead work.
Saturday noon we had breakfast and then decided to do some shopping we'd been putting off. Got ourselves another calendar, lots of socks (good Smartwool, the older version which they're phasing out), the green jacquard bedspread I've been lusting after for months and the book of pressed fairies which I've been wanting for years. I'll probably find out it's stupid when I go to read it, but it's pretty and has that sick sense of humor I love. ;)
And then we ran home and cooked and ate dinner at lightning-fast speed so we could make it to our neighbor's concert. He did this thing at the Community Center where he invited only specific people and they recorded, and it was a pretty good show. We ran off as soon as they were done, though, because we were completely beat.
This morning I pretty much devoted myself to getting a beta on someone's story finished up for her. And of course the afternoon, like most Sundays, was devoted to groceries and cooking. Made wilted spinach with garlic sauteed in ghee. I thought it was awesome. Eor thought it was tolerable. :)
Must sleep, now.
