It's blustery, overcast, wet, and generally yucky outside and I'm not looking forward to taking the recycling back and going to the Town Hall. Eor wants me to check on the railroad right of way to see how close to the tracks we can plant or build things.

Well, just had a pleasant talk with a couple of guys at the Town Hall. Seriously, they seem like really decent guys, willing to discuss it even though they have no idea what's going on. They don't seem to have a record of a recent survey for our property. The railroad's right of way is 40 feet from the center of the track, which seems to encompass most of our parking area, easily the whole area which we want to plant in, and the shed which our neighbor in the back unit thinks she owns. So we could be opening up a can of pretty legal worms by bringing this up. However, a good swath of the hotel across the road also seems to be on railroad property, so I'm not sure if there might have been some legal adjustments which his software isn't showing.
The guys at the Town Hall say the railroad won't care about our planting things, although I understand well enough without their saying so that any worries about the herbicides which the railroad sprays are all ours. The railroad usually spray within about ten feet of the track because they have a legal responsibility to keep things from growing so that in times of drought they won't start forest fires. (Although seeing as they don't use coal fired engines anymore I think this seems a little outdated.)

It sounds like they don't really care if people encroach into thier property so go for it, I say. I wouldn't put too much time or money into planting things there just yet though, just in case the railway DO get stroppy.
