Live 8 is coming to an end (although apparently they're going to keep it on eternal re-run all summer on AOL) - Paul McCartney is back on stage.  I adored hearing The Who and Pink Floyd.  Hearing, because I read fic all the while, as I ate my late lunch/early dinner, and just took an occasional glance over [livejournal.com profile] eor's shoulder to see how the guys were aging.  I, however, really can't remember all that well how they used to look - I've never paid that much attention to how musicians look.  I just know that good musicians are nearly always ugly.  I never had the opportunity to watch MTV at the appropriate stage in my development to become concerned with such a thing - music, for me, has always been something ethereal; something I happened to catch, something I replayed in my head or occasionally sang.

I do think, though, that Pete Townsend looked rather good.  Rather impressive that he can still perform given he's lost all the midrange of his hearing.

Paul McCartney looks ... the same as he has for, like, ages.  [livejournal.com profile] eor says his hair can't be all real.  :)

Of course I didn't get to watch all of this by a long shot, but I couldn't tear myself away to go to the laundry until after UB40's set. :)

Hawk phoned, sometime before UB40's set (how's that for a relativistic time reference?) and we discussed his plans for visiting, and music, and this and that.  Oh, and he gave me a couple of new lightbulb jokes:

How many lead guitarists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A hundred.  One do do the actual job, ninety-nine to say how much better they could have done it.

How many bass guitarists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Who cares?

I said that was really wrong, about bassists, because in my opinion the bass guitar anchors the music, which he seemed glad to hear.  I wasn't sure if he thought that I just said that to make him feel good.  I didn't.  I didn't really think about it when I said it.  But, I guess some lead guitarist once told him that nobody would ever notice a bassist missing, aside from it being a physical absence on the stage.  His opinion - that lead guitarist had no idea of how music worked.

It's 7PM - I should get more things done so that I'll be able to get started decently early tomorrow in order to drive to Belfast.

edited at 7:30PM to add:
Finally! Barenaked Ladies are on the stage in Toronto! *is happy* Half an hour after everyone else is done. :)

Theoretically you might be able to watch the rebroadcast, they're supposed to have it on endless loop, here:

It works for Eor, he can watch it. I can only get audio. My computer is funky about a lot of things... seems to be the hazard of belonging to me.

Bass is actually the lead instrument in some types of music, reggea and ska for example. We are useful!

Hm, makes sense, then, that I love ska like I do, because I love bass guitar. (As I told my brother) I think that if I could only make myself learn bass guitar I could probably make myself happy for hours on end and get all meditative with it - and he said that he does that.
