I may have mentioned this before - I know I've thought about it real hard - but when I'm particularly run down and brainless feeling I tend to default to reading Holmes / Watson slash.  H/W is like that comfortable old shoe.  It's the relationship I can depend on - it's always there for me.  I've seen the best and the worst displayed in H/W fandom, and regardless of the bad I never lose my love for it.  There's other fandoms that I can say similar about, but almost all of them have more than one pairing.  It's rare to find anyone besides Watson with Holmes.  (Yes, there are examples, but few and far between, and usually markedly part of angst stories.  It's just not right.)  One True Pairing, and, apparently, my One True Fandom, in a way.

In the years I've been reading H/W I've cycled through plenty of shiny new fandoms: Red Dwarf, Harry Potter, Real Ghostbusters, and right now Jeeves / Wooster and Mike / Psmith.  I'm so happy and excited with them, and I never lose my affection for them, even if they aren't in the forefront of my thoughts, and I don't cycle to new shiny things as quickly as some people seem to.  But there you go, there's always the possibility of a new shiny thing.

What's your old shoe?  What's your current shiny thing?

My old shoe is probably Red Dwarf -- I think I've read almost every story out there except some of the more recent RDSS ones (and FF.N), and one thing I've noticed with the slash is that while the fandom experiments, Lister/Rimmer is the dominant pairing that everyone, eventually, comes back to.

My current shiny thing is Lord of the Rings RPS, because [livejournal.com profile] lisabellex writes it and it's strangely addictive, even if I don't know much about the actors' lives the way some die-hard LotR fans do.
