In the "I'm not saying a mumblin' word" department: a compilation of stories about the situation in New Orleans.
There's a million stories coming out of New Orleans, not all of them negative. Most of the million seem to be on one entry on
jmhm's journal (found via
daegaer) - including how Fats Domino got away. (Don't feel bad if you don't read it all - I can't even comprehend the volume of information, there, much less read it all.)
Oh, you recall my angst over volunteering to go down to New Orleans to help the relief efforts and then having to withdraw my name? Eventually we were told, on the 5th, that only those of us who already had government credit cards could go. Suddenly, they can't let us travel without government credit cards, and they can't process the paperwork fast enough. Previously any time they've sent us anywhere they've done standard reimbursements - they pay for the airfare and hotel, we pay out of pocket for food and get X amount per day back in our paycheck, later.
And now, because
daegaer has so kindly posted so many links to relief organizations, worldwide, I will put a cork in it turn my attention to positive ways to deal.
International Committee of the Red Cross (
camwyn reported, 9/4, that the French and Canadian Red Cross groups had arrived. [Also, the Scientologists. :)])
MusiCares - organized to help musicians.
World Vision and their Alternative Gifts Catalogue.
Beliefnet donates $1,000 for every 100 people who donate to World Vision or Mercy Corps.
Oxfam
Unicef
I'll go steal some more links, tomorrow. I'm beat for today. And need to get moving - eep, I forgot I don't have the car! I need to walk to work. Only an hour left - must go.
Oh, wait - my own personal cheering story du jour - Last night June stopped by while I was stationed at exit to let me know that she's done turning down invitations to go out with TSA people, as she has finally realized that we're all just as messed up as she is, and she'd love t hang out with us, now. :) It's true that everyone's normal until you get to know them.
