The prisoners have been taken to America, to work on a plantation. Nic's still weak from his wounds. He's half-regained his memory, and knows that Pete Burge has saved his life at least twice, but he's still scared of the big, rough guy and won't meet Burge's eyes... but Pete's always there to catch him when he swoons. ;)
