I had OMGSOMUCHFUN with my cousins last night! And this morning, both before and after we slept for a few fitful hours. ;) Turns out D. (Jepdog) writes fanfic about Viggo Mortensen(sp?), and P. has written her own Grimoire for Young Wizards (with all sorts of herbal lore, info about famous wizards - philosophers and thinkers - of the past, and examples about how to live a good life and such) to amuse her and D.'s sons. They had also made broomsticks, wands and wand boxes for their kids for Christmas. The wands are made out of the woods associated with their birth months, although without the heartstrings of dragons and such. Their work all looks pretty amazingly good, I was really impressed.
So of course I showed them my page and P. zeroed right in on the Fluffy Japanese Schoolboys, and... they both read On Waking and said they liked it.
Oh, the movie was "Chocolat" (Johnny Depp, right?), so that's why they were focusing on an all chocolate theme. Since I just started my oh-so-blessed time of the month this was quite welcome to me. ;) We each took our turns predicting the next bit of plot or the next line, and picking out continuity errors. It felt wonderful to be reminded of the fact that we may have certain disagreements about how to approach the world, but we do all have these family resemblances - we love a good story, we like to write, we're obsessive-compulsive about certain tings and yet completely disorganized, and we're huge dorks. When P.'s son got up this morning he discovered the confetti tubes she'd gotten, and we shot them out all over the place, setting the whole floor completely adrift. :)
Now, however, I'm completely exhausted. I don't sleep well in places I'm unused to, and the combination of the heating system sounding like some bizarre sea monster and a gigantic tom cat who wanted to snuggle up to me, the four hours I had available were not efficiently spent. He was a sweet, purring thing, twenty pounds of purring and knitting, and I felt badly but the second time he pounced I put my hand right on his face and pushed, whimpering, "I need to sleep!" Eor and I severely curtailed the activities we'd planned for the day (a trip to the Portland Head Light had been seriously discussed, as had exchanging the coat I gave him for Hogswatch) but we did go out and buy music, and then, after cooking a big meal and eating myself into a torpor, I spent three hours sorting the incredible drift of papers which had taken over my desk and bedside table. (I found stuff I'd been ignoring since August - I REALLY need to get in a weekly habit of cleaning up some of this stuff. It would probably save on late fees.) However, at the bottom of all that mess I found a $10 bill! I think I must have planted that to reward myself. :)
