My father and step-mother visited for about four hours, today.  Conversation was... I suppose desultory might be a fairly accurate word.  Partly because my Dad's hearing loss means you have to speak very loudly and clearly, and if you drift off you have to start over again.  And partly because I'm nervous in the presence of my step-mother.  And partly because I have no idea how to talk to people who don't do the same work I do or have the same fannish interests.  I've got into a rut, I fear.

They were here because they'd brought my Aunt B down to the airport to fly to Florida to be with her daughter, K, and granddaughter, C, because K's ex-husband, P, just died.  I hadn't realized he was an ex, and felt very out of touch, but later on in the evening my Aunt S phoned, because she was totally depressed about the whole thing - she lived nearby K, P and C, and at some point spent a fair amount of time with them - and she told me that for some reason K didn't want anyone to know that she and P had divorced.  She kept it a secret.  So, I wasn't all that out of touch.

While we were out to lunch at Becky's, [livejournal.com profile] eor went shopping for a thingy to replace the server and connect all our machines, but while he was out there braving the wilds of the Mall...

He got a new remote, and he says he's going to program it so that I'll only have to push one button in order to make a DVD play. :)

Also, a set of five Jackie Chan movies. :)  ("Fantasy Mission Force," "Master With Cracked Fingers," "Eagle Shadow Fist," "Fire Dragon," and "The Young Tiger.")  And now my MP3 player and it's accessories are inhabiting the tin box that the movies came in. :)  (The box, oddly, opens on both the top and the bottom, so it can only be used for light weight things.)  Does anyone want the official dragon headband that came with the set?  It's white with some characters on it.

And now,

FOUR JOBS YOU'VE HAD IN YOUR LIFE:
(first four I didn't either get fired from or walk out on.)

1) Cashier at CVS (pharmacy).
2) Cashier and later Service Desk Clerk and movie manager at a Hannaford Shop N' Save store.
3) Network Support at Homeruns.Com (a pilot program which Hannaford sold off to venture capitalists who killed it).  (I have since forgotten every bit of networking understanding which I gathered at the time, so don't ever ask me anything.)
4) Telephone Receptionist and later Medical Records Clerk at a doctor's office.

FOUR MOVIES YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER:

1) Leon: The Professional
2) Grosse Point Blank
3) Murder By Death
4) Monty Python's Holy Grail

FOUR PLACES YOU'VE LIVED:

1) Swan's Island, Maine (before I remember)
2) South Hope, Maine (it's between East Union and West Rockport, and we moved away when I was 14.)
3) Belfast, Maine (for high school)
4) Portland, Maine (and I've been away and come back so many times that I can't even keep track of it)

FOUR TV SHOWS YOU LOVE TO WATCH:
(Um.  I don't watch tv these days.  But when I did...)

1) The Simpsons
2) Futurama
3) Malcom in the Middle
4) The X-Files (but not the last couple of seasons).

FOUR PLACES YOU'VE BEEN ON VACATION/HOLIDAY:

1) New Orleans
2) Joshua Tree (National?) Park, in southern California.
3) Hiking/camping in the White Mountains (a number of times)
4) Las Vegas

FOUR WEBSITES YOU VISIT DAILY:

1) LiveJournal
2)
3)
4)

FOUR OF YOUR FAVOURITE FOODS:

1) (Indian) Lamb Korma
2) (Thai) Red Curry
3) (Chinese) Hot and Sour Soup
4) (Greek) Lamb Gyro

FOUR PLACES YOU'D RATHER BE:
(If I was with Eor and had a job that I liked... because otherwise this question gets a big fat zero.)

1) Seattle, WA
2) Ireland
3) England
4) Cambridge, MA

FOUR ALBUMS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT:
(I didn't grow up with any sort of music that I could just listen to on demand, so this is actually meaningless to me.  I can live without any albums.  But if we were to list the ones I'd feel a huge imperative to replace it I did not...)

1) Beat Soup, "Start From Scratch"
2) Beat Soup, "Miriam Your Toast Is Burning"
3) David Bowie, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust"
4) Adam Brodsky, "Folk Remedy"

Did I ever post about the dream I had about being on a train with the Scooby-Doo people, and real monsters pretending to be monsters?
